Swimsuit Catalog

Intended to cover intimate parts of men’s and women’s bodies, swimsuits or bathing suits have appeared is a wide variety of styles and fabrics through the ages and they ranged from the very modest full-length garments to the ultra skimpy near-nudity.  The reason for such drastic difference is, for the most part, due to the fact that the definition of “intimate parts of bodies” changed from one generation to another as well as between social and communal circles.

Today, swimsuits for man are fashioned as:

  • Swimming trunks which are loose shorts which come down to the middle of the thigh.
  • Swim briefs can be designed to cover the buttocks or to expose them such as with thongs and g-strings.
  • Square leg suits are very similar to swim briefs but their cut at the leg area is more conservative.
  • Boardshorts are similar to the swimming trunks except that their legs go down to the knees.
  • Jammers look somewhat like cycling or compression shorts and they are mostly used by competitive swimmers.

As women’s bodies are so much more complex and as societal, cultural, ethnical and religious taboos so often apply to them; swimsuits designed for women are also somewhat more intricate and they are available in a wider range of patterns:

  • One piece swimsuits are also known as tank suits and they inspired the eventual design of tank tops which have become quite popular as warm weather attires.
  • Monokinis are one piece swimsuits that are designed as –

- bikini bottoms with no tops to cover breasts and these are fairly popular in Europe where there is an abundance of nudist beaches but rarely seen in the United States;
- bikini shape from the back but with the front entirely covered;
- sling bikinis which are also known as suspender bikinis, suspender thongs, slingshot bikinis or slingshots and are merely skimpy straps that provide little to no body coverage.

  • Thongs swimsuits are regular one piece or two piece swimsuits except for the fact that they leave the buttocks entirely exposed.
  • Bikinis are designed with their buttons riding very low below the waist and they are available in several styles such as –

- Thongs
- T-backs
- G-strings
- Tankinis which are bikini bottoms with tank top above them

  • Other types of two piece swimsuits are Stringbodys, halter-necks, maillots and plunge fronts.
  • Burqinis are especially adapted to the modesty requirements of Muslim women.  Much like divers’ wetsuits, burqinis cover women’s entire bodies leaving only their faces, hands and feet exposed.
  • Special swimsuits are available for competitive swimming.  These suits are made of a particular fabric (usually spandex) and are designed to provide more protection to the swimmers’ skin as well as giving them better gliding ability through the water in order to gain more speed.
