Mail Order Business

Since the Internet has become such an integral part of life for most of us and it is accessible just about everywhere in the world today, getting started on your own mail order business is a very good idea which can ultimately lead to financial success as well as the self satisfaction of owning and running your own business.  Another good reason to start a mail order business is the fact that mail order transactions are continually increasing as more and more shoppers are discovering its convenience, its cost savings and the ease with which overseas sellers can be reached.

But founding a new mail order business is not a “get rich quick” scheme as it requires the thirst and the yearning, a hefty investment of time, a substantial knowhow, persistently hard work and, of course, deep pockets filled with money.  If anyone ever tells you otherwise, they would only be misleading you.  Assuming that your passion is stirred and you are ready to get started, remember that there must be some logical sequence to the process:

  1. What will you be selling?  Browsing through the Internet you will soon realize that just about everything and anything, be it a service or a product, can be acquired through a mail order business of one kind or another.  I would advise that you settle on something which you are already familiar with and never try to sell a product or a service which you do not respect and would never buy for yourself.
  2. How will you sell it?  Get yourself thoroughly educated about the mail order business in general, about the product or service you will be selling and about the way the mail order business can work most effectively as pertaining to the product or service you will be selling.  Use successful mail order businesses as role models to learn from but never copy because copying can be illegal and it is definitely unscrupulous.
  3. Where will you be conducting your mail order business?  You do not want to start your business with the expense of renting office space.  Designate an area in your own home and be sure to have a desk, a computer, a filing cabinet and office supplies.  However, you might want to rent a post office box and get a toll free telephone number as well as a fax machine.
  4. Who will be working in your mail order business?  At least in the initial stages, do it all yourself.
  5. Website.  Set up a professional looking and behaving website.
  6. License and registration.  Get your new mail order business licensed and registered with its new catchy name.
  7. Marketing.  Advertise your new business and its product or service, and you might want to start with an attractive promotion.  You should also place a couple of classified ads and get yourself listed on one or more mail order directories.  Continue to expand your marketing in proportion to the growth of your business.  Save your money and do not buy mail lists as many of them are ineffective and out of date.
  8. Suppliers.  Establish contacts with one or two reputable suppliers and be sure that you researched them well.  Begin with local and national suppliers before attempting to work with the international.
  9. Selling and shipping capability.  Set up an online ordering system as well as a system for orders coming in through the mail, telephone or via fax.  To save on shipping expanses, you might want to deliver the products to your local customers but that should change as soon as the business grows.
  10. Income.  If you have a day job, do not quit it until your business brings in enough income to sustain your lifestyle consistently for six months.
  11. Stock.  Keep only a minimal amount of stock as most orders should be shipped directly from the suppliers.
  12. Time.  Give your new mail order business the natural time it needs to establish its roots and grow without rushing it.
